Diesel, hybrid, and electric power unite in Toyota’s most advanced ute yet.

Toyota has officially unveiled the next-generation 2026 HiLux, and it’s shaping up to be the most exciting evolution of Australia’s favourite ute yet. Designed and developed right here in Australia, the new HiLux combines a bold new look, upgraded performance and comfort, and — for the first time ever — electric power.

Designed and Developed in Australia

This new chapter in the HiLux story proudly carries an Australian signature. The exterior design was led by Toyota Australia’s design team, based in Altona, working closely with counterparts in Japan and Thailand.

The result? A powerful new “Cyber Sumo” design theme that blends strength and modern style. With slim-line LED headlights, sharper lines, and redesigned front and rear ends, the 2026 HiLux is built to stand out both on and off the road.

Adding to the excitement, the HiLux Rugged X makes its return — tougher and more capable than ever, complete with off-road protection and recovery gear as standard.

Electrified Future: BEV and FCEV HiLux

  • The HiLux BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) will arrive in 2026, designed mainly for fleet and business customers looking to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing performance.
  • A Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) variant is also in the works, set to launch in 2028, offering another cleaner energy alternative.

These additions reinforce Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to decarbonisation, giving customers more choice than ever before.

Comfort, Tech, and Safety: A Smarter Cabin

Step inside and you’ll instantly notice how far the HiLux has come. The 2026 model introduces a completely redesigned cabin, featuring a flatter three-tier dashboard for better visibility, a new digital instrument cluster, and a massive 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen standard across the range.

Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are built in, along with embedded navigation and an upgraded version of Toyota Connected Services — letting owners stay connected to their HiLux via a smartphone app.

Safety takes a major leap forward too. Every model now includes Toyota Safety Sense, featuring:

  • Pre-collision safety and active cruise control
  • Lane trace assist and road sign assist
  • Blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • A new cabin detection alert system, which uses radar to detect passengers left inside the vehicle

Rugged Meets Refined: Power and Performance

Under the bonnet, the 2026 HiLux sticks with Toyota’s proven 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine, producing up to 150kW and 500Nm (auto) or 420Nm (manual).

New models introduce 48-volt V-Active technology on automatic double cab SR grades and above, offering smoother stop-start operation and an extra boost when accelerating.

Toyota has also overhauled the steering and suspension systems — adding electric power steering for better handling and two-tier suspension tuning to cater for work-focused and comfort-oriented drivers alike.

Off-road fans will love the upgrades too. The Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) system and rear locking differential are now standard on many 4x4 grades, while higher-spec models gain the Multi-Terrain Monitor, giving drivers camera views of their surroundings and underbody for easier off-road navigation.

Built for the Road Ahead

The new HiLux continues Toyota’s legacy of Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR) — values that have made it Australia’s best-selling ute for decades.

Set to launch in December 2025, the 2026 HiLux will arrive in 21 different variants, from single cab workhorses to premium double cab pickups. With bold new looks, cutting-edge tech, and the addition of electric and hydrogen options, this HiLux is not just tougher — it’s smarter and greener too.

Toyota’s Vision for the Future

As Toyota Australia’s VP of Sales, Marketing and Franchise Operations, Sean Hanley, puts it:

“The new HiLux delivers a wide range of improvements to driveability, safety and comfort — all while staying true to the rugged dependability that Australians love.”

The 2026 Toyota HiLux represents the next step in Toyota’s long-standing commitment to Australian drivers — combining innovation, performance, and sustainability like never before.

Whether you’re a tradie, adventurer, or family, the 2026 Toyota HiLux delivers everything Australians love about the iconic nameplate — now reimagined for a smarter, cleaner, and more future-ready era.

Stay tuned for pricing and full specifications as we count down to its official Australian launch in December 2025.
