Brake fluid; most of us know it’s there, but don’t know much about it, or know that it should be replaced regularly. It is estimated that for every 15,000 kilometres you drive, your brakes are used 75,000 times, so it is extremely important to keep them in good condition.
Brake fluid is often overlooked when we think about car maintenance. Oil, water and coolant are common fluids that most of us know of; we know why we need them, and (some people) even know how to change these. But brake fluid is an essential part of your car’s overall maintenance that should not be forgotten.
Why is good brake fluid maintenance important?
Brake failures are perhaps the scariest of all mechanical failures. Sometimes, in spite of the brakes looking mechanically fine and the fluid being at the right level, brakes can fail unexpectedly. Why?
Well, the higher the level of moisture, the lower the boiling point of the brake fluid. When brakes are used, they get hot and when the boiling point of the brake fluid is low, it boils more easily, causing failures when put under pressure.
Further to this, brake fluid helps lubricate the brakes and keep brake lines in good condition, meaning the likelihood of expensive repairs to this part of the car is reduced.
Moisture, brakes and living in Cairns
Over time, the level of moisture contamination in brake fluid means that brakes become less effective and potentially dangerous. This is especially of concern in Cairns, where humidity is high. And for this reason, it is extremely important that all car drivers living in Cairns and the Far North have their car serviced and brake fluid replaced more regularly than the recommendation (which is every 2 years at a minimum).
Replacing brake fluid
So, how do you replace your brake fluid? Well, unless you know what you’re doing, it is recommended that you take your car to an auto mechanic for a full car service to have this done. Replacing brake fluid does not come with the standard car service, but generally your mechanic will test the boiling point of your brake fluid and advise you as to whether this should be replaced.
Having your brake fluid replaced may come at an extra cost, but when you consider your family’s safety, the maintenance on your car, and the cost of replacing rusted brake lines, it’s a small price to pay.
