Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota Safety Sense

The road is an unpredictable place – you can never be certain of what dangers may lie ahead. Which is why Toyota has developed Toyota Safety Sense (TSS)[S1], a multi-feature active safety package designed to support safe driving practices.

  • Pre-Collision Safety System - Minimise your risk of frontal collision
  • Lane Departure Alert and Lane Trace Assist - Corrective support if you start to drift
  • Active Cruise Control - The smart way to manage your speed
  • Automatic High Beam - Minimise glare for safer night-time driving
  • Road Sign Assist - Stay alert to changes in the speed limit

Please note: All of the Toyota Safety Sense technology features are a driver-assist features only. They are not designed to replace safe driving practices.

Pre Collision Safety System

Using your vehicle’s built-in camera or radar, the Pre-Collision Safety (PCS)[B8] system has been designed to alert you when a frontal collision is likely.

Many Toyotas come with PCS as standard. Some new models feature PCS with Pedestrian Detection[B2] (which, depending on your vehicle, may be effective during the day and/or at night) and PCS with Cyclist Detection[B37] (effective during the day only) to avoid or reduce the severity of a collision.

Pre-Collision Safety system with Cyclist Detection[B37] only available on Corolla Hatch models produced after June 2018.

HOW IT WORKS:

Alert

If a potential collision is detected, the system will sound a buzzer and display the word “BRAKE” on your Toyota’s Multi-Information Display (behind the steering wheel) or Head-Up display if you have one.

Assess

Once you’ve hit the brakes, the system will check whether you’ve applied enough pressure. If you haven’t, it may add a little extra to avoid or reduce the severity of a collision.

Support

If the hazard is too close, the Pre-Collision Brake (PB) system will activate, applying a large amount of pressure to help you stop sooner and minimise any damage.

Don’t forget:

Even when you’re driving a vehicle that uses PCS with Pedestrian Detection Technology, you must always remain aware of your surroundings – especially as pedestrians and cyclists aren’t always easy to see.

Here's a list of some of the things that might impact the operation of your PCS system:

Low or harsh light
People who may be obstructed from view
Certain clothing or movement that obscures or affects body contours
Pedestrians that are under one metre or over two metres tall

Lane Departure Alert and Lane Trace Assist

Sometimes, all it takes is a momentary lapse in concentration to start to drift. But with Lane Departure Alert (LDA)[B12] programmed to scan the road ahead and identify lane markings, you’ll get the crucial warning you need if you start to drift.

HOW IT WORKS

Alert

If you veer from your lane while travelling at more than 50km/h, the LDA system will sound a buzzer and display a visual warning on your Multi-Information Display.

Correct

It’s then up to you to move safely back into the centre of your lane to avoid any potential risk of collision.

Support

If your Toyota has LDA with Steer Assist, the system may add a bit of extra steering support for a short period to help keep your vehicle in its lane.

Active Cruise Control

Active Cruise Control (ACC)[B9] uses your Toyota’s built-in camera and front-grille-mounted radar to keep your vehicle at a pre-selected speed, automatically accelerating and decelerating with the traffic in front.

Some Toyota models feature All-Speed ACC, allowing you to slow down to 0km/h. Other select models only feature High-Speed ACC, which is designed to operate at speeds above 50km/h.

HOW IT WORKS

Constant speed control

Once you’ve reached your chosen speed, simply activate and set the ACC, and your vehicle will stay at your chosen speed. If you want to cancel ACC, just apply the brake or deactivate the ACC.

Following control

To ensure that a safe distance between vehicles is maintained, the road ahead is monitored by both a camera integrated and a radar. When these sensors detect a slower moving vehicle within range , the system will slow your vehicle to maintain a safe distance.

Deceleration control

If the car in front slows down or gets closer than your pre-set range, ACC will automatically reduce your speed until you reach 40km/h. If you need to slow down even further, you’ll get an audio and visual alert.

Acceleration control

If you’re travelling slower than your constant speed setting and the vehicle in front accelerates, ACC will automatically increase your speed until you’re travelling at the speed you have set.

Automatic High Beam

While high beam headlights are a great safety feature for night time driving, leaving them on can be a hazardous distraction to other drivers. The solution? An advanced piece of technology that reduces the need to manage your headlights manually[B6].

HOW IT WORKS

Monitor

When travelling over 50km/h at night, Automatic High Beam (AHB)[B6] uses a built-in camera to detect the headlights of oncoming traffic and the tail lamps of vehicles in front.

Switch

If the camera sensor detects a change, such as the presence of streetlights, headlights or tail lights ahead, it may shift from high to low beam to help you maintain safe and considerate driving.

Road Sign Assist

Road Sign Assist (RSA)[B39] is a smart new safety feature designed to identify standard Australian speed limit signs and let you know, with a visual alert, when it’s time to adjust your speed.

HOW IT WORKS

Detect

Using its front-mounted camera, your vehicle has been programmed to detect and relay speed limit information to you via the Multi-Information Display behind your steering wheel.

Adjust

When used with Active Cruise Control (ACC)[B9], RSA lets you alter your constant speed setting with a single click immediately after a change in speed limit has been detected.

Available only on Corolla Hatch models produced after June 2018.
